On Sunday night, May 7, the Monmouth County SPCA's Animal Control Division responded to a call about a puppy left on the side of the road.

SPCA responders found an emaciated 8-week-old puppy that was abandoned in the Myrtle Avenue area in Neptune.

"What we saw was beyond words. Skin and bones, labored breathing, and unable to lift her head," the SPCA wrote on Facebook.

"A puppy we've named 'Matilda' was on the brink of death."They rushed her to their shelter for urgent medical care.

"She was shaking and whimpering and we weren't sure she was going to make it," the SPCA said.

They wrapped Matilda in warm blankets and began IV fluids to try and give the tiny girl some life.

"Matilda has been minimally responsive to our care, and she's still in critical condition but we're doing our absolute best to keep her comfortable," they said.

Please call our Humane Law Enforcement Division at 732-440-1539 if you can provide any information about the dog.
